Notes:* This has become a popular field to image (IC 1396 area); however, there is confusion as to the actual positional identity of the object I designate as "vdB 142". According to the "Atlas of Galactic Nebulae", by Th. Neckel and H. Vehrenberg, the object they designate as GN 21.35.1.02 (vdB 142) is a faint blue reflection nebula to the northwest of the star near the eastern end of LDN 1105 (dark lane). See the 14.5" version.

This is the (blue) CDS image/data for GN 21.35.1.02.

This is the CDS position for LDN 1105.

The sinuous dark lane LDN 1105 is also known as the "Elephant Trunk" nebula. The object with the bright rim and embedded dark lane is not vdB 142.

See here for my 1993 14.5" f5 Newtonian image of vdB142 (arrowed), taken on hypered Kodak Tech Pan 2415 film.

See here for Adam Block's color image that nicely shows the fan-shaped blue nebulosity of vdB 142
